Step-overs, crossovers and roof walkways

Step-overs and roof walkways

Step-over platforms carry people safely over pipes, ducts, cable trays and roof upstands. Walkways mark and protect the route across the roof, so nobody steps on fragile areas or damages the waterproofing.

Step-overs

Climbing over a pipe or duct is one of the easiest ways to trip on a roof. A step-over gives a proper set of steps with handrails on each side, sized to what it crosses.

  • Over pipework, ductwork and cable trays
  • Over roof upstands, parapets and level changes
  • Aluminium or GRP, with anti-slip treads and handrails

Roof walkways

  • Anti-slip walkways that sit on the roof without drilling
  • Clear routes from the access hatch to plant and equipment
  • Keeping foot traffic off fragile roofing and away from edges
  • Painted walkway routes and safety markings where a coating is better

Your report

After every job you get a short written report with before and after photos. It is evidence for your records, your inspector, your client or a deposit dispute.

Common questions

Do step-overs need fixing to the roof?

Most can be freestanding, sitting on protective pads so the roof covering is not punctured.

Can you make a step-over to fit an awkward obstruction?

Yes. Step-overs are made to suit what they cross, including height, span and the space either side.
